Inclusive and effective implementation of draft Target 3: Lessons learnt from past country experiences
The draft Target 3 of the Global Biodiversity Framework, if adopted is likely to call for the promotion of well-connected systems of equitably governed and effectively managed protected areas and other effective area-based conservation measures (OECMs). This side event brings together several countries supported by the GEF that are starting inclusive and effective protected area and OECM planning processes. The event will also showcase work being undertaken to develop a guide for national planning to inclusively and effectively reach GBF draft Target 3 when adopted.

Needs from protected area systems in Latin America to address the effectiveness component of target 3 of the new post-2020 framework
In Latin America, different countries have been making efforts to implement management effectiveness tools, encountering numerous challenges along the way, that in many cases at the end make it difficult to know how effective protected area systems are. In this context, staff from many protected area agencies in Latin America have been exchanging experiences since 2013, to identify the main barriers to achieve effectiveness, and possible solutions thereto.

Identifying, recognizing and reporting OECMs: Experiences in implementing COP decision 14/8
The definition and criteria for OECMs were adopted in 2018 under COP Decision 14/8, supported by IUCN Guidelines and training materials. There is much work to be done to ensure that OECMs are appropriately identified, recognized and supported, so that they meet their potential for biodiversity conservation.
The event will offer short presentations and discussions of case studies of OECMs with different governance models and stakeholders from Canada, Africa, Latin America and Asia. |
Connecting the crises: Integrating ecological connectivity in the Post-2020 GBF to combat biodiversity loss, climate change, land degradation and the next pandemic
This side event will bring together high-level representatives of governments and relevant organizations to highlight why ecological connectivity is crucial to the long-term success of the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF). Panelists will discuss how connectivity can be best reflected in the GBF’s goals, targets and monitoring framework.
